Meet Mallory, a hardworking, duck-loving mechanic in the big city. Explore a world of work through a third-person isometric view (certainly not adjacent to that of a security camera!). Explore houses and fix broken appliances. Help the poor electrician reach the legendary dream goal of purchasing a plane ticket to a beach paradise vacation in the Bahamas.
Explanation behind design choices (spoilers ahead!):
Unlike many other 2D games that feature a one-plane tileset, we decided to apply an isometric one to Time Fleet to emphasize the concept of surveillance in this unfamiliar world. Mallory is tied to long hours of work under this gaze, compelled to work by the player whose role and view mimics that of a corporation. Even at home, Mallory’s actions are seen under the overbearing watch of employers. Despite the clear signs of individuality through Mallory’s sprite/clothing, the fondness for ducks is never explored, as there is never enough time. The title “Time Fleet” is a play on words of how time is constantly fleeting under the extortion of employees under companies, while simultaneously referencing the ending of the game, where it is revealed that companies had been using technology to conceal the reality from society; Mallory has been living in a fleet of spaceships far away from Earth and the Bahamas. Only during the cutscene that gives this revelation are we given some semblance of a first-person perspective as Mallory takes in the galaxy above. Earth is shown to be light-years away, its land burning, which can be inferred as the doing of corporate greed. A clear effort to avoid accountability for past actions further highlights the callousness of Mallory’s employers and their relentless pursuit of efficiency and progress.
